BUYER GUIDE

Care guidance for high-visibility workwear.

Care instructions must match the exact finished garment, because fabric, reflective tape, decoration and finish all change the applicable route. In the United States, the FTC Care Labeling Rule requires a care label that stays attached and legible for the garment’s useful life, with a reasonable basis for its instructions.

For EN ISO 20471 garments, the manufacturer determines and states the maximum number of cleaning cycles the garment withstands without losing performance. Confirm whether that figure reflects domestic washing (ISO 6330) or industrial laundering (ISO 15797) before choosing a wash program.

What to check

  • Washing temperature and method.
  • Drying and ironing limits.
  • Detergent, bleach and fabric-softener restrictions.
  • Domestic or industrial laundering route.
  • Maximum number of cleaning cycles.
  • Inspection and replacement guidance.

Questions buyers ask

Can hi-vis workwear be industrially laundered?

Only when the garment is designed and tested for it. ISO 15797 describes industrial washing and finishing procedures used to test workwear intended for industrial laundering. Confirm the tested route and the stated cleaning-cycle limit for the finished garment.

How many washes does a hi-vis garment last?

There is no universal number. For EN ISO 20471 garments, the manufacturer states the maximum number of cleaning cycles the garment withstands without losing performance. Follow the stated care route and replace garments sooner if the color fades or the tape is damaged.

Which care symbols are used on workwear labels?

ISO 3758 care symbols are used internationally, and ASTM D5489 symbols are accepted in the United States. Labels should match the care route the garment was tested for.
