BUYER GUIDE

How to use size information for workwear.

Size information comes in two forms. Body measurements describe the wearer; garment measurements describe the finished product, including the fit and layering allowance. Under EN ISO 13688, protective clothing carries a size designation based on body measurements such as height and chest girth, shown in a pictogram.

Ask for both kinds of measurement, then compare garment measurements with wearers measured over their working layers. Visible material shrinks with size, so confirm that the smallest size ordered still meets the required visibility class.

What to check

  • Chest width and body length for tops and vests.
  • Sleeve length for shirts and jackets.
  • Waist, hip, inseam and rise for pants.
  • Tolerance for each measurement.
  • The size designation pictogram for EU markets.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between body and garment measurements?

Body measurements describe the wearer, such as height and chest girth. Garment measurements describe the finished product and include the allowance for fit and layers. Compare garment measurements with wearers measured over the clothing they wear at work.

How do I choose a size for a hi-vis vest?

Measure the wearer over the bulkiest layers the vest must cover and compare with the vest’s finished chest width, usually measured flat from armpit to armpit and doubled. Check body length so the vest covers the waist without hanging below a tool belt.

Does garment size affect the visibility class?

Yes. Smaller sizes carry less material. Under ANSI/ISEA 107, only the smallest size in a range may use a reduced background area, 540 in² for Class 2 or 1,000 in² for Class 3, so every size ordered must still meet its class.
